Volumetric (Dimensional) Weight
Shipping costs are sometimes determined by the space a package occupies on an aircraft rather than its actual weight. This is known as volumetric or dimensional weight.
It is calculated using the formula:
Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 5000
Most express carriers, such as DHL, charge based on whichever is higher: the actual weight or the dimensional weight. For EMS shipments, the cost is generally based on actual weight. However, if any side of the package measures 60 cm or more, EMS will charge based on the greater of actual or dimensional weight. EMS calculates dimensional weight using:
Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6000
